How working in a research lab can be therapeutic

An interesting concept coming your way…
Doing research for my lab is therapy for my OCD.
Because collecting data in real time prohibits me from repeating the task over and over again, I’m forced to stop after one go-around. This means that no matter what I’m thinking, I have to carry on with my work.
I find this to be true for analyzing the data as well. If I were to avoid certain parts of the analysis, then the results could be skewed or biased. And if I were to repeat certain parts of the analysis for irrational reasons, I would never meet my deadlines.
Doing research is a fine distraction for me since it requires all of my focus.
I never considered the debilitating effects that OCD could have on my potential career. I guess I’ve always just been a pretty optimistic person… or I figured I’d grow out of my OCD.
Whatever the reason, I’m glad I don’t let my OCD stop me from pursuing what I want, and I’m glad I chose a major that will require me to fight the urges to ritualize.
Even when there isn't easy access to a certain kind of help, find other ways to implement the skills learned from therapy into your day-to-day life.
